Kentucky Bluegrass replaced by abundance!
This single family home came with a large turf front lawn that struggled to thrive in our dry Colorado climate. The clients are often away from their home and wanted a landscape that could thrive in the natural conditions of the Front Range. Tired of paying to irrigate unused grass, the clients wanted to convert their turf into a pollinator garden that would not use the water, fertilization and mowing the turf required. To keep up with their busy lifestyle, we proposed a palette of native and native-adapted plants that thrive in Colorado’s harsh climate. We proposed an array of perennials, including many that readily self-sow such as Ratibida columnifera, Rudbeckia fulgida, Echinacea pallida and Festuca idahoensis. Overhead irrigation was used for the establishment of the garden and can be used in periods of extreme heat or drought. Red sandstone stepper paths provide access to the home and a red stamped concrete path provides access to the backyard.
